讲座内容简介:
One contemporary controversy in rhetorical theory is whether rhetoric should be conceived as a specific discipline, carefully separated from philosophy, on the one hand, and political theory, on the other, or whether rhetoric should be conceived more broadly, in terms of its interdependence with philosophy and political theory. Although it is necessary in some contexts to define rhetoric narrowly as a specific discipline, I argue here that it is also productive to conceive rhetoric philosophically. Part of the value of this approach is that it allows us to better understand the rhetorical universalities in social and political thinking and the rhetorical capabilities that are one of the goals of education. Once we comprehend these universalities and capabilities, we will be able to give better definition to equity and freedom as they take shape in communication.
